Leap Day Letters

Leap Day Letters

Happy Leap Day!

In 2012, my senior year of high school, I decided to write myself a letter to read on leap day 2016 (my senior year of college) and then again for today. It’s a little tradition I’m so glad I started. I feel like it can be so powerful to look back on your life and see where you were, the goals and aspirations you had for yourself when you were younger and getting to see where you are now. And let me tell you what a crazy and amazing 8 years it’s been.

Packing up for college in Summer 2012. My 2012 to 2016 letters had the greatest amount of change being such a huge time in someone’s life.

Today looking back over my 18 year old self and my 22 year old self I have come a long way.  Life has changed a lot in many ways and it’s also stayed the same in a few. The people in my life have changed, the relationships I have had changed for the better and for the different, I’ve lost some of those I cared deeply for but I’ve also gained a lot.

2016 saying goodbye to University of San Diego. Michael by my side, the next 4 years had so much growth for us and for my personal life goals.

I was really happy to read some of the wishes I had that came true over the past 4 years and being able to answer some of those unknown questions I left myself with. This morning I woke up next to my husband, in our home, with our dog, and my heart felt so full.

9.14.19 One of the best days of my life! So happy I was able to answer the questions I left myself in 2016 with a smile on my face.

But when I started writing my letter to read in 2024 I felt a little nervous. The more you have in life, the more you want, the more you put yourself out there, the more you have to lose. The scarier it can be. Setting these goals is powerful. Self manifestation and putting your desires out there to the universe is powerful. But your own agency is just as important. 4 years don’t go by and poof you have what you wanted. You need to work towards those goals. I need to do my best to open that letter next Leap Day and be happy to read it.

I encourage anyone reading this to join me on my Leap Day tradition. You could even make it a yearly thing but I really like the 4 year chunk of time. It’s long enough for life to lead you somewhere different and it’s long enough to go after some of your life goals.

Here’s to the next 4 years and seeing where I’ll be in 2024.
